Evan Ellis - Argentina's Milei Returns Idea of Limited Gov't to Global Stage
Dear Colleague,
With this email, I am proud to share with you my work on Argentina’s new President Javier Milei, and his re-introduction to the global discourse of the merits of limited government and individual initiative in the creation of value and advance of our societies.
Much of the coverage of President Milei in the international press has focused on his unique personal style, and Argentina’s numerous challenges. I argue in my work that the value of Milei’s core message about the value of the individual, freedom and limited government should not be overlooked…particularly in an era in which the rise of China seductively sells a concept of government-led development at the cost of individual freedom. Milei’s message is particularly important in Latin America, the U.S. and beyond, where for many, the application of more government has become the instinctive response to difficult challenges.
I argue that Milei’s transcendental message about the value of the individual spirit, and liberty, advanced so powerfully during a previous generation by leaders such as Ronald Regan and Margaret Thatcher in the face of Soviet totalitarianism, is the missing ingredient in a values-based Western response to the global challenges of China and the diversity of illiberal regimes that pursue their own benefit in collaborating with it.
