Evan Ellis - China and Guyana: Re-Igniting an Old Flame?
Plus: Leland Lazarus and Alexander Gosco on "Triads, Snakeheads, and Flying Money: The Underworld of Chinese Criminal Networks in Latin America and the Caribbean"
Dear Colleague,
With this email, I would like to share with you my new article in Spanish and English, “China and Guyana: Re-Igniting an Old Flame?” just published by” the China-Latin America Academic Network (RedCAEM). The work looks at Chinese activities in Guyana in the context of President Irfaan Ali’s recent very positive visit to the PRC, considering the potential for the relationship’s significant expansion in the coming years, stemming from longstanding PRC ties to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and connections to businesspersons and other elites associated with, as well as the country’s expanding oil wealth. I would like to thank my distinguished RedCAEM colleague and China-Latin America expert Dr. Pamela Arostica Fernandez for translating and publishing this work.
I would also like to share an important new study (not my own) on Chinese organized crime in Latin America, authored by Leland Lazarus and Alexander Gosco, of the Jack D. Gordon Institute of Publc Policy at Florida International University. While I don’t usually use this venue to share works other than those I have personally authored, I was honored to have reviewed provided feedback to the authors as they completed this excellent study. The work leverages their Mandarin-language research capabilities and impressive analytical skills to provide visibility to Chinese activities in an area where relatively little has been written.
