Evan Ellis - Edmundo Gonzalez in Washington D.C. + Evolution of the Ecuador-China Relationship
Dear Colleague:
First and foremost, a very warm welcome to Washington D.C. to Venezuelan de jure President-elect Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia for his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden. It appears hopeful that the Biden Administration will give President-elect Gonzalez all of the trappings of a senior-level reception consistent with their recognition of his status as President-elect of Venezuela. I also am hopeful that President-elect Trump understands that he has options to expel criminal migrants such as Tren de Aragua to third countries…and thus does not need to negotiate with the Maduro administration, as some have suggested. It is thus my hope that Secretary of state-designate Marco Rubio, and National Security Advisor-designate Mike Waltz are able to engage with President-elect Gonzalez, consistent with the principled, career-long fight for democracy and against dictatorship by both, including Representative Waltz’s co-sponsorship of the Bolivar Act. My sincere best wishes and admiration for President-elect Gonzalez, Maria Corina Machado, and their team as they take the courageous step toward inauguration in Venezuela, where those who illegally occupy the country by force of arms, backed by external allies including Cuba, Russia, Iran, and China, have sworn to arrest Gonzalez, in the unfolding drama, with unavoidable biblical parallels, in which too many self-proclaimed “democratic” leaders in Latin America are tending toward the role of Pontius Pilate…
