Evan Ellis - El Salvador: Results Versus Norms in a Troubled Democracy
Dear Colleague,
With this email, I would like to share with you my new article “El Salvador: Results Versus Norms in a Troubled Democracy,” just published in English by inFocus, the journal of the Jewish Policy Center. I would also like to share the Spanish-language version, “El Salvador: el atractivo de los resultados a costa de la protección en una democracia convulsa,” published by the Argentina-based news service InfoBAE.
The articles recognize the impressive, short-term success of the Bukele administration in suppressing the gangs and significantly increasing public security, and the widespread popularity he has achieved among Salvadorans for doing so. It also looks at the long-run risks to Salvadoran democracy, and the risks of the transformation of the youth jailed as society approvingly or indifferently stood by, into something even more dangerous. The article also examines challenges in Bukele’s broader policy agenda and argues for a pragmatic U.S. policy of constructive engagement, helping El Salvador to better advance its development agenda, while preparing it for the undesirable consequences that his current success may unleash.
