Evan Ellis - Lessons for Latin America from PRC moves against Taiwan
Dear Colleague,
I am proud to share my newest article on “Lessons for Latin America from PRC moves against Taiwan.” The article looks at recent PRC aggression against Taiwan and its Asian neighbors accompanying Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the Republic of China (ROC). It looks at repeated examples of PRC aggression in Asia in recent years against its neighbors and own people, as well as PRC attempts to intimidate the United States, as part of a well-established historic pattern regarding how the PRC behaves where it feels itself "strong." In the context of growing PRC economic and political engagement in Latin America, particularly in the wake of Covid-19 and the region’s unprecedented political transformation, this article argues that how the aggression and arrogance currently being displayed by the PRC towards Taiwan (an island it has never governed), the United States, neighbors in Asia and its own people, should be food for thought for Latin American political and business elites, who, attracted by the lure of Chinese money, presently dismiss expression of concern as just “Great Power diplomacy” and open doors to expanded PRC presence in their economies, and indirectly, in their politics and liberty of expression:
