Evan Ellis - Russian Warships, Venezuelan Elections, and a Fabricated Crisis with Guyana in the Caribbean?
Dear Colleague,
I am proud to share the English and Spanish-language versions of my new article “Russian Warships, Venezuelan Elections, and a Fabricated Crisis with Guyana in the Caribbean?” I wrote it to address what I see as widespread misunderstanding in media accounts regarding the “threat posed” and “message being sent” by Russian warships currently in Cuba:
The planning time required for the Russian flotilla means that it could not have been a “response” to the U.S. authorizing Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied weapons against targets in Russian territory.
For serious military analysts, the details of the Russian deployment (discussed in this article) highlights both grave Russian military weaknesses, as well as Putin’s prioritizing political symbolism for his own benefit, over the interests and operational imperatives of the Russian military.
Finally, I discuss the most significant risk of the Russian deployment: the possibility of Russian warships being present in the Caribbean, in the event that the Maduro regime in Venezuela decides that they are too far behind in the polls to credibly steal the elections, and instead, attempts to fabricate a military crisis using his claims to Guyana’s Essequibo region, in order to cancel them.
