Evan Ellis: The New Nicaragua Canal: Chinese Strategic Options Ever-Closer to US Shores
Dear Colleague:
This week, within his many executive orders, policy initiatives, and statements, incoming President Donald Trump has focused attention on the threat to U.S. strategic interests from the Chinese presence in the Panama Canal.
As a compliment to this focus, I am pleased to share my new article, which looks at the strategic threat to the US presented by another, recently reinvigorated, PRC canal project, in the nearby nation of Nicaragua, which is controlled by a regime far more hostile to the U.S. than is the government of Panama.
Although China’s realization of the newly announced Nicaragua Canal is just as unlikely as its last Nicaragua Canal project, it highlights the threat to U.S. strategic interests by the PRC advance in that country, whose dictatorship under Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo also facilitates transnational crime, subversive groups, and military activities by other anti-U.S. rivals such as Russia and Iran.
