Evan Ellis - The Strategic Value of Taiwan and Stability in Asia for Latin America
Dear Colleague,
I am proud to share the English and Spanish-language versions of my new article “The Strategic Value of Taiwan and Stability in Asia for Latin America.” It is derived from remarks to current and former Latin American leaders at the Latin American and Caribbean Presidential Mission Forum, on June 7, 2024, in Miami, Florida, and my interactions with the distinguished guests at that event.
For many in Latin America, hopes for commercial and personal benefits from engaging with the PRC tempt them to refrain from talking too publicly about predatory PRC business practices, PRC behavior in Asia and what happens there…or to dismiss such concerns as “just great power competition” or “far from Latin America.” This brief think-piece makes the case for why what happens in the IndoPacific, including the survival of Taiwan, should matter to Latin America and the Caribbean, whether or not the U.S. “out-bids” the PRC for the region’s loyalties.
