Evan Ellis - The World's Fading Democratic Moment
Dear Colleague,
With this email, I am proud to share my latest, deliberately provocative work on “The World’s Fading Democratic Moment.” The article examines the nature of the current interactions between the forces of global interdependence in the context of the rise of China and a diversity of new illiberal actors, as well as the difficulties in an effective U.S. response. It argues that the long-term consequences, from a strategic perspective, may be to significantly undermine the rules-based democratic order which has been the enabler of economic growth and relative stability since the end of the Cold War. While such results are not inevitable, I argue that the dynamics currently playing out are sufficiently clear that they deserve serious consideration by strategic planners and others interested in the trajectory of the global environment.
The article was published by the important new Colombian journal on geopolitics and strategy “Geodese.” Thanks to their efforts, it is available in four languages: English, Spanish, French and German:
