Evan Ellis - Uruguay-PRC Relations and their Free Trade Agreement
Dear Colleague,
I am writing to share my new work, “Uruguay-PRC Relations and their Free Trade Agreement,” just published by Global Americans.
The work focuses on the Uruguay-PRC free trade agreement currently being negotiated, the associated issues and challenges, and the implications if it goes forward.
The work also examines the strong and increasingly important relationship between the two countries which extends not only to trade and investment, but also to military and other security cooperation. The relatively strong and transparent institutional framework that Uruguay uses is an admirable example for other countries to mitigate the risks of often-predatory behavior of PRC-based companies, its government and security services.
Nonetheless, the growing relationship becomes even more significant after Brazil’s October elections, after which the Lecalle Pou government in Uruguay may stand alone with only Guillermo Lasso in Ecuador and the Mario Abdo Benitez in Paraguay as the last market-oriented center, or center-right, governments in all of South America.
