The Advance of China and Authoritarian Populism in Honduras
Dear Colleague,
Discussion of Latin America in Washington D.C. this week has been dominated by reports of the PRC possibly purchasing access to Cold War-era signals intelligence facilities in Cuba, as well as the coming visit by Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi to authoritarian anti-US friends to the region. Overshadowed, but also significant, has been the visit by Honduran President Xiomara Castro to Beijing, where she and her entourage has been sealing commitments with her regime’s new partner, the PRC in ways that will affect the economic trajectory of her government and China’s presence in a part of the region close to and intimately connected with the United States.
With this article, I'm proud to share my new work putting into context the direction that Castro’s Libre regime is taking in Honduras, including not only with the PRC but also in other areas…and the implications for the US and the region.
