Evan Ellis - Argentine President Fernandez' trip to Russia and China (en Espanol)
Dear Colleague:
With this email, I would like to share with you my analysis of this week’s visit to Russia and China by Argentine President Alberto Fernandez. The article, in Spanish, goes into detail surrounding the inopportune proposals by President Fernandez in his meeting with Vladimir Putin, as well as the details of the multiple events and deepening areas of collaboration touched on by the visit.
This article further uses Argentina as an example to highlight the risks that US policymakers should consider from the growing number of leftist and/or populist governments in the region: Although some may seek common ground to engage with committed democratic actors in those regimes, understand legitimate issues such as endemic corruption, insecurity, poverty and inequality that brought them to power, and possibly even identify with parts of their statist/social justice agendas, those US policymakers should also keep in consideration the risk from more malign actors within governing parties and movements, who may have agendas to hijack their democracies and take their governments in worrisome directions, presenting opportunities to extra-hemispheric rivals of the US such as China, Russia and Iran, as those states pursue their own strategic interests in the region.
The Spanish-language version of the article is available here for download:
It is also available at InfoBAE, which published it:
