Evan Ellis - The Monroe Doctrine Then and Now
Dear Colleague,
On the 200th Anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine, I am happy to share with you my new essay on the “policy,” which has been widely debated, and understood very differently in different parts of both the U.S. and Latin America, as well as the rest of the world. The concept itself has evolved with both the U.S. and international circumstance. I argue that the contemporary challenges of engagement in Latin America and the Caribbean by Russia, Iran, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and other extra-hemispheric increase the importance of re-examining the intention of the content of the concept when it was first introduced, of the common interests of the U.S. and its neighbors in our shared hemisphere, where the actions of external actors, whether pursuing economic or other objectives, impact all of its residence through shared bonds of geography, commerce, and family.
