Evan Ellis - Understanding PRC Engagement in the Caribbean

Dear Colleague, With this email, I would like to share with you my new two-part series “Understanding PRC Engagement in the Caribbean.” I argue that the region has particular strategic importance for the PRC, as a function of its geographic proximity to the United States as the U.S. southeastern maritime approach, its importance as a financial and logistics hub, and the location there of 5 of the 14 countries in the world maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan. That importance to the PRC is reflected in the significant focus that the region receives from the PRC, relative to the region’s population and economic size, with respect to investment and loans, people-to-people diplomacy, and political and security engagement.
