The Problem with China's new Global Civilization Initiative
Dear Colleague,
With this email, I would like to share with you my article on the problems, contradictions, ambiguities and inconsistencies within China's new “Global Civilization Initiative (GCI).” I argue that at its heart, CGI promotes a self-serving concept of “non-interference,” which is attractive to illiberal regimes interested in protecting their own autonomy of action, and often criminal activities. I argue that GCI, if taken literally, also presents fundamental challenges to the function of the rules-based international order, as well as contradicting the behaviors of the PRC itself.
